MUSTANG GENTLING PROGRAM NEXT PRISON ADOPTION SATURDAY - May 29

at Camp Stewart Prison

1721 Snyder Avenue Carson City, NV

Preview 9:00 AM - Live Auction/Adoption 10:00 AM

At the Bottom of this page are "graduates" of the Prison Mustang Gentling Program

When you review the horses, don't let their sizes bother you...These are young horses.  When you get these boys home, get them on a consistent diet of good food, keep working with them, groom them often,  they will FLOURISH.  My horse was 14H about 800 lbs when I purchased him, and now, 4 years later he is 15'2 and pushing 1000 lbs.

To get a "feel" for what these young horses turn into....look at the tab labeled  "Look at us" on the home page of our web site.

Quotes from previous Mustang Adopters.........

People forget that these are YOUNG horses - they will continue to grow until they are 5 or 6. We have some friends who adopted some prison horses two years ago and they recently mentioned how surprised they are (pleasantly) that the horses have grown to be quite large. The ones they adopted were low priced because people overlooked them due to their size. But they are now over 15 hands tall

Of course.  The prison mustangs are young.  They're going to have 2-3-4 years until they fully mature.  (That is, if they get fed decently and are given plenty of work.  Even with domestics, their musculature can change significantly from puny to being very stout.  On the flip side the opposite can occur.  At HSA where I have my horses, there is a quarter gelding who used to be nice looking.  This lady bought him green, got bucked off him and now he's stood in his corral for over two years.  The muscle is gone, and he looks very immature now.  Very sad.)

Even Red has changed from the five-year old when I got him to the nine-year old now.  People think he's a quarter horse, until I flip his mane over to show his brand.  He's not big or that stout, just nicely put together.  To me, he looks like a calvary remount horse from way back.  He went through the prison program, too.

The most important thing that needs to be instilled in people is the need to work these horses consistently, at least in the beginning.  For the first month after I got Red (he had been turned back to the BLM), I got him out every day turning him loose in a round pen, and then riding him once he got rid of his excess energy.  He was out for at least 1 1/2 hours/day in the beginning because that's what it took.

From Cindy: Hank, the head trainer at the prison, along with his wife Paula are two of my favorite people in the whole world.  My family and I are privileged to call them "Friends".

Mustang "GRADUATES" from the Prison Mustang Gentling Program

Adopted 2/13/2010 (first weekend home) "Tuffy" (formerly Tubby)

When we brought him home that first day, we were all so excited to have a new addition to our family.  He's settling in with our herd really well, by today, the third day the dominant male has accepted him and they pal around together.  He's such a wonderful horse I feel blessed to have had the opportunity and good fortune to be able to add him to our family.

I was hoping my big, tough husband would accept him as well, he's used to BIG quarter horses (this is our first mustang and I have to say I believe we are both sold!)--my husband LOVES him too--it's so wonderful to watch him with Tuffy...he's so gentle and kind and gives him lots of encouragement (and whispers asking him to listen to mom.  LOL)  Our 3 kids ages, 5,6 and 10 just can't get enough of him either--and I think Tuffy feels the same way.  The picture is my youngest loving on him--she just loves to walk him around our pen and keeps bugging me to ride him (which she's done every day since we got him, with and without a saddle)  We've been spending lots of time with him everyday as my husband tries to teach me how to work with him on his (and my) ground manners-I'm having a great time!

My name is Kathy.  My boyfriend is the Head Wrangler at Greenhorn Creek Guest Ranch. He purchased two mustangs from your prison program: Joe and Paleface.  Paleface is my baby!  I love him so much!  He is truly a Wonder Horse. Smart and gentle, opens gates both ways, active in Team Penning. Everyone that throws a leg over his saddle is touched by him! Lisa Kelly from Greenhorn asked that I send you some pictures of Paleface...so I have a few attached.

2/04/09 "Reno" and Ed - Reno adopted at Wild Horse and Burro Expo 08/21/09

My name is Mary and I met you at the Carson City Mustang adoption on October 10, 2009.  I wanted to give you an update on how Gypsy is doing.  I have added Boy to the end of his name since everyone was calling him a she.  He's very curious about everything. The day we left Carson City we did a gymkhana and he did really well for just coming off a long drive home.  He had to stop at each barrel and check it out before going around as well as check out everyone in the crowd.

To date he has gone on several trail rides, Christmas carolling on the steets of Stockton (he even allowed me to put bows on him), and two camping trips to the beach.  His first trip to the beach was great.  He stared at the ocean with big wide eyes and his ears straight up, just looking.  He even went to the breakline but didn't want the water touching him.  Our second trip was over New Year's we did a 9 mile trail ride to the beach and he actually went into the ocean, with some encouragement.  He has been a great horse and we have built a great trust between the two of us.  We are still working on who the alpha is and I am slowing winning that battle, but he is a momma's boy!

We have many more adventures planned.  We will be doing 125 miles across the Mohave Desert in April and moving on to another series of gymkhanas in the spring along with trail rides and more camping trips.  I have attached a picture of the two of us from our last trip to the beach (I hope the file isn't to big to open).

Regards, Mary   Lathrop, CA

Staci and Royal at there 1st show. Royal is a prison trained mustang. adopted August 2008 at the wild horse and burro show. There is not anything this horse will not try for her.

Please let Bo, the inmate who trained Royal, see how Staci has done with him. They want him to know how much they love Royal,  and want to thank him for what an awesome job he did in his starting for Royal.

Here is an updated photo of our prison trained mustang Spyda (a.k.a. Spiderman). We had him out for a gallop on the beach south of San Diego last week.

This is me and Casper, he was adopted at the prison 4 years ago.  This was 2 years ago at our first trail trial.  Casper was perfect.    This picture was us crossing our first bridge.  He acted like he had always done it.  I figured out after the first two obstacles, Casper would watch the other horses.  So every obstacle after that, I waited and let him watch before we took our turn and he would be perfect.  No, we didn't win, but it was about seeing how he would handle obstacles, lots of people and horses.  He was incredible.  I think he had more fun than me.  He was my perfect partner all day.
