SHOWMANSHIP:

This class focuses on the handler's ability to present the animal to best advantage, through proper handling in the show ring, as well as preparation before the show: cleanliness, grooming, hoof care and maintaining ideal body condition (in other words, not too fat, not too thin, exercised regularly for proper muscle development, etc.)

Conformation of the animal is not a consideration, except to the extent that each showman should present his/her animal to its best possible advantage, recognizing its strengths and weaknesses and compensating to the extent possible, through proper presentation. Over-showing, undue fussing, and extreme posturing are not to be rewarded, however.

13. YOUTH SHOWMANSHIP 17-and-under
14. SHOWMANSHIP – AMATEUR ADULT
SPONSORED BY Sky's the Limit Horse Rescue
15. SHOWMANSHIP - OPEN

EQUINE CITIZENSHIP (Ground Manners):

Unlike domestic equines, that are usually purchased already trained, one first has to tame and train a wild one. Equine Citizenship classes offer an opportunity for adopters to show their good work in bringing their wild equines to a stage of gentling and training where the animal is adjusting well to domestic life and handling, even though saddle training may be a ways off yet. All species & genders combined.

These classes – new last year and very popular - are designed to encourage all adopters and owners of mustangs, mustang mules, and burros to develop safe and happy relationships with their animals. Contestants will be judged on overall Socialization, ground manners, comfort on both equine and human's part, and training to perform specific everyday tasks needed to care for the animal. Equine Citizenship is for everybody - not just "show horses."

 A good Equine Citizen should:
Stand within safe and respectful distance, on slack line
Stand calmly in a relaxed, attentive manner
Allow Judge to walk up and pet the animal
         Allow handler to pickup front & hind feet;
Allow Judge or handler, at judge's request, to examine mouth, teeth, ears, and eyes
         Walk on lead line without pushiness, resistance, bolting, or shying;
Lower head and stand calmly for haltering
         Back up willingly
         Load into trailer
         Yield Hindquarters on command
Yield head and shoulder to right or left to lead into a turn
Allow flag and/or rope to be gently touch body and feet
OPTIONAL: Perform one "trick" just for fun: Bow Down, Lie Down, Smile, Nod Head, etc.

B. TRAIL CLASSES (Includes requirements for Ranch Versatility Trail)

DESCRIPTION: This class contains a course with a minimum of six obstacles and is designed to show a horse's ability and willingness to perform several tasks that might be asked of him during the course of a normal day's ranch work. The horse will be judged on three gaits: walk, trot and lope, performed between the obstacles, to be determined when the judge chooses the pattern. A horse will be rewarded with higher credit for performing these gaits on the correct lead and with an alert attitude.

The desired performance is an animal that is willing, responsive, calm, under complete control of the rider, smooth and relaxed in movements. Three tries are allowed for each obstacle, after which the competitor must move on, with no points allowed for that obstacle. If the judge sees a safety issue, the handler or rider may be asked to move on before completing three tries. Animals that are deemed to be out of control may be disqualified, at the judge's discretion.

Obstacles may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  •  Opening, passing through and closing a gate
  •  Back up between two rails
  •  Backing up between two rails, turning while backing
  •  crossing a tarp on the ground
  •  crossing a water obstacle
  •  crossing over a bridge
  •  walking or trotting through poles, which may be evenly or enevely spaced, or set in a pattern
  •  opening a mail box
  •  turning around in a box
  •  other obstacles as the trail judge chooses

For those entered in the Ranch Versatility Series, there will be an additional set of obstacles, consisting of:

  •  Dragging a log either in a straight line or around a set pattern
  •  Dismount, Bridle Removal: The horse remains quiet while the rider dismounts, removes the bit completely from the horse's mouth and re-bridles
  •  Pick up each of the horse's feet while horse stands quietly.
  •  Two or more obstacles chosen from: crossing a water hazard; being hobbled or ground tied; crossing a bridge; turning around in a box, backing up between two logs, putting on and taking off a slicker, and any other obstacles determined by the show committee.

The Ranch Versatilty section is optional for other participants.

TRAIL - IN - HAND – Horses, Mules, & Burros combined:

C. WESTERN CLASSES

WESTERN PLEASURE/RANCH RIDING

This class on the rail shows the horse's ability to move at a working speed with a rider. Horses will be shown at three gaits: walk, trot and lope, in each direction of the arena. Riders should sit the extended jog. Horses will be asked to change directions while on the rail, and to stop and back. A horse will be given credit for traveling with his head held in a normal position, ears alert and moving at a natural speed for the gait requested. Credit also will be given for making a smooth transition between the gaits, for keeping the correct lead and for maintaining the gait until the judge asks for a change. A rider must show his horse with only one hand on the reins, unless the horse is being shown in a snaffle bit or hackamore (bosal). Choice of headgear and bit is rider's choice.

F. RANCH & CATTLE CLASSES

81. RANCH CUTTING - AMATEUR
82. RANCH CUTTING - OPEN

Rider must cut a single numbered cow from the herd and the horse must demonstrate ability to work the cow. When satisfied that the horse has proven its cutting ability, the horse and rider must then pen the cow at the far end of the arena. Contestants will have 2 1/2 minutes to cut and pen a designated cow from a herd of at least 10 head. Horses will not be penalized for reining during the cutting portion and should display the horse's natural cow ability.

83. WORKING RANCH HORSE - AMATEUR
84. WORKING RANCH HORSE - OPEN

WORKING RANCH HORSE CLASS DESCRIPTION: This class combines the ability of the working ranch horse to rein, handle cattle and put its rider in the position to rope and stop a cow. Each contestant will perform individually. A maximum of 6 minutes is allowed to complete the class. When the 6-minute time limit has expired, the exhibitor will be required to exit the arena.

The class is to be judged in three sections. Scores from each section are added together for the final score of the class.

  •  Reining Pattern:

One of two approved patterns will be used for this class. Maneuvers include at least one circle in both directions, a change of leads in each direction, at least one 360-degree turn in each direction, a rollback in each direction, stop and back.

  •  Cow Working:

After the exhibitor has completed his reining pattern, he will call for the cow to be turned into the arena. Upon receiving the cow, the contestant shall hold the cow on the prescribed end of the arena for a sufficient amount of time to demonstrate the ability of the horse to contain the cow.  After a reasonable amount of time, the contestant shall take the cow down the fence, making at least one turn each way on the fence.

  •  Roping:

OPEN: The exhibitor must then rope the cow and bring it to a stop. The horse is judged on his ability to trail, rate and stop the cow. There is to be no dragging and the exhibitor is allowed only two throws. Ropes cannot be tied to the saddle horn. It's not necessary for the exhibitor to catch in order to receive a score. However, if there is no catch, a five point penalty will be subtracted from the roping score. Two tries allowed.

AMATEUR: The exhibitor will rope a “straw bale cow” with the rope securing the horns that are mounted on a straw bale. Two tries are allowed.

85. TEAM SORTING (all age and rider divisions combined)

TEAM SORTING CLASS DESCRIPTION: Each team consists of 3 Horse-Rider Pairs. The object is to sort 10 head in numerical order through a gate.

  • 10 calves will be numbered in consecutive order. If riders allow any cattle not consecutively numbered to be sorted through the gate, or if they allow any cattle to return back through the gate after being sorted, they will be judged “no time”.

  • There is a 3 minute time limit for this event.

  • There is a no lope rule for this event. You must sort the cattle at a walk or a trot, treating the cattle as you would if you owned them.

  • Team will draw a number in between 0-9 corresponding to a calf before they begin. This will be your starting number. For example, your number is 6, you must first sort out number 6, then 7, 8, 9, 0, 1, etc.

  • Cattle will be settled after each run.

  • One rider from the team will signal to the timer that they are ready by holding up their hand. At that time the starting number will be announced and time will begin.

  • Cattle will be deemed sorted when they are sent through the gate. If cattle are sorted out of order, the team is judged “no time”.

  • Hazing of cattle with hats, romal or ropes will be cause for disqualification with no refund of entry fees. Slapping hand to leg or romal to leg is permitted.

  • Teams are judged on the number of cattle sorted.

1.      If 10 cattle are sorted, then time will become a determining factor.

2.      The clock will be stopped when the last cow crosses the foul line. It is permissible at any time to stop sorting and hold cattle already sorted until the clock runs out of time.

Abuse of cattle or horses will be cause for disqualification for the run without refund of entry fees. Use of foul language while participating will be cause for ejection from the event without refund of entry fees.

Award Rules

Points for all awards are accumulated by rider/horse combination.  Points earned by the same rider on two horses will not be combined.  Likewise, points earned by different riders on the same horse will not be combined.

RIDER/HANDLER DIVISIONS (AGE BREAK, AMATEUR, OPEN) WILL BE TALLIED SEPARATELY. Each Animal-Handler pair generates its own Exhibitor Number and points calculations. If an animal is shown by more than one handler, each handler with the animal will earn separate points. Likewise, if a single exhibitor shows more than one animal, points will be accumulated separately for each one. (Example: Dobbin is ridden by Sally in the Youth classes, and by Bill in the Open classes. Dobbin and Sally are one Exhibitor/Animal pair, with their own Exhibitor number and their own points, and Bill and Dobbin are a separate Exhibitor/Animal pair, with their own number and their own points. Dobbin’s points earned with Sally do not contribute to points earned with Bill)

Point System -

Points will be tallied using the following system:

1st place = 6 points, 2nd = 5 points, 3rd = 4 points, 4th = 3 points, 5th = 2 points, 6th = 1 point

Rider divisions with fewer than 6 total riders:
If an entire exhibitor classification has six or fewer competitors, points awarded within that classification will be modified based on the number of participants within the classification. For example, if there are 4 in the division, 1st place = 4 points, 2nd place = 3 points, etc. Points will not be reduced on an individual class by class basis, only for the entire exhibitor classification.

Bonus for large classes:
A bonus point will be awarded to all exhibitors who place in a class with ten or more entries. Two bonus points will be awarded if the class has twenty or more entries. For example, if there are 13 in the class, 1st place = 7 points, 2nd place = 6 points, etc.

Tie-breaker:
In the case of a tie, the exhibitor with the most blue ribbons is the winner. If there is a tie in the number of blue ribbons, the person with the most 2nds is the winner, etc.

Points for any award are tallied separately for each exhibitor classification, and the horse/rider combination with the most points, regardless of exhibitor classification will be the Champion.

High Points means just that: High Points. In cases where an exhibitor may not have entered every possible class for a certain award, but still has earned high points based on the classes entered, that exhibitor will win over one who entered all classes but earned fewer points.

AWARDS:

Classes that count toward each award are listed below the award.
