New Classes for 2004 Expo:

We have added a number of exciting new classes, chosen to be fun to watch, as well as to compete in. These classes emphasize the natural strengths and versatility of wild horses & burros, as well as striving to reward adopters who have worked hard to meet the unique challenges involved in adopting and training them. (Unlike buying a domestic horse, who is usually already trained, before you can train a mustang for riding and showing, you have to gentle it and teach the basic ground skills)

These classes are intended both to encourage good horsemanship, and to provide adopters a venue for showing off their hard work with new adoptees who may not be ready to compete in regular classes yet.

NEW CLASSES - CLICK FOR DESCRIPTION & RULES

EQUINE CITIZENSHIP (Ground Manners):

These new classes are designed to encourage all adopters and owners of mustangs, mustang mules, and burros to develop safe and happy relationships with their adoptees: Socialization, ground manners, overall comfort on both equine and human's part, and training to perform specific everyday tasks of caring for the animal. Equine Citizenship is for everybody - not just "show horses."

TEAM SORTING

Register in teams not individually.

·         10 calves will be numbered in consecutive order. The object of this event is to demonstrate how to sort 10 head in numerical order through a gate. If riders allow any cattle not consecutively to be sorted through the gate, or they allow any cattle to return back through the gate after being sorted, they will be judged “no time”.

·         There is a 3 minute time limit for this event.

·         There is a no lope rule for this event. You must sort the cattle at a walk or a trot, treating the cattle as you would if you owned them.

·         Team will draw a number in between 0-9 corresponding to a calf before they begin. This will be your starting number. For example, your number is 6, you must first sort out number 6, then 7, 8, 9, 0, 1, etc.

·         Cattle will be settled after each run.

·         One rider from the team will signal to the timer that they are ready by holding up their hand. At that time the starting number will be announced and time will begin.

·         Cattle will be deemed sorted when they are sent through the gate. If cattle are sorted out of order, the team is judged “no time”.

·         Hazing of cattle with hats, romal or ropes will be cause for disqualification with no refund of entry fees. Slapping hand to leg or romal to leg is permitted.

·         Teams are judged on the number of cattle sorted.

1.      If 10 cattle are sorted, then time will become a determining factor.

2.      The clock will be stopped when the last cow crosses the foul line. It is permissive at any time to stop sorting and hold cattle already sorted until the clock runs out of time.

Abuse of cattle or horses will be cause for disqualification for the run without refund of entry fees. Use of foul language while participating will be cause for ejection from the event without refund of entry fees.

POLE BENDING - Timed event

  • Ridden
  • Driven

Pole Bending Race

Race Description:

A rider may start on either the left or right side. Enter the arena at desired speed and race straight to the end pole first. Weave through all 6 poles headed back in the direction of the alley way. Go around the pole nearest the alley way and weave all 6 poles in the reverse direction. Race straight back to the timer line.

Penalties:

A five-second penalty will be assessed to the rider’s time for each pole that is knocked over.

Disqualification:

Riders are disqualified and receive a “no time” if there is any deviation from the pattern including failure to follow the course, loss of course, out of pattern change of direction, wrong direction, reversing direction or crossing the timer line prior to completing the pattern.

Pattern Distances

  • Six poles aligned in the center of the arena.
  • First pole is 21’ from timer line with 21’ between each pole
