COSTUME & AMERICANA CLASSES:

AWARDS
All of the award rules have been designed to maximize each competitor’s opportunity to win. It is to your benefit to enter all the classes within your division if possible. Enter as many classes as you feel comfortable and your horse can safely complete. Regardless of how many classifications you enter, or how many horses you have, whether you are a child, an amateur, a special needs rider/handler, or a professional, everybody stands a fair shot at an award!

CLASS DIVISIONS (Click on any division for list of classes):

* Exhibition classes are both for entertainment, and as "test" classes for consideration as regular classes next year - similar to the way the Olympics uses Exhibition games as a stepping stone toward full Olympic status.

ANIMAL CLASSIFICATIONS:
Mustangs, Mules, &  Burros (Donkeys)
  •  Wild-Origin Status:

    • Freeze-Branded (BLM & some Comstock)* Horses, Mules & Burros

    • Range-Bred Non-Freeze-branded Horses, Mules & Burros from any source, Documented

* Freeze-branded will include BLM and some Comstock horses.

  •  "Appendix Status:"

    • Horses, Mules, & Burros with at least one Wild-Bred parent

    • Horses, Mules, and Burros who would qualify as Wild if they had better documentation

Note: Wild-Bred horses and Appendix are shown  together, but awarded separate High Point Championships

  •  All Ages & Genders: Juveniles, Mares, Jennets, Geldings, Johns, Stallions & Jacks Are Permitted

   EXHIBITOR CLASSIFICATIONS:
Note: CHOOSE YOUR DIVISION CAREFULLY:
Each Human/Animal Pair shall choose one division and show within it for points toward SUPER HORSE/BURRO, ALL-AROUND CHAMPION, etc.
If you switch divisions, the point count starts all over again. You may, however, enter different animals in different divisions, as a different animal generates a different rider/animal pair. (Example: A person who qualifies as an Amateur may enter one horse in Amateur and One in Open)
  • YOUTH (2 age divisions: 12-&-Under, and 13-17)
  • ADAPTIVE: Riders with Special Needs
  • ADULT WALK-TROT
(NOTE: ADULT WALK-TROT is like "JACK BENNY" -only we aren't discriminating against younger new riders, so we're just calling it ADULT WALK-TROT. This division is for people who may have taken up riding as adults, or for whatever reason do not wish to compete against the regular Amateur status riders. Please note: There are not enough ADULT WALK-TROT classes this year for an All-Around Championship, or to count toward Super Horse.
If you wish to try for Super Horse or an All-Around Championship, choose Amateur status rather than ADULT WALK-TROT)
  • AMATEUR

 ALL - AROUND AWARDS

  • ALL AROUND CHAMPION & RESERVE CHAMPION High Point Categories
    • English
    • Western
  • SUPER HORSE & SUPER BURRO

WILD ORIGIN STATUS:

includes Freeze-branded and non freeze-branded BLM, USFWS, USFS, Comstock, Indian Reservation, County & private lands from the Reno area and other areas known to have unprotected wild horses,  & qualifying wild horses from other sources.  Also included are horses, mules, and burros born in domesticity out of a mare or jennet who was pregnant (with the animal in question) at the time of her adoption.

Documentation is Required to prove Wild Origin Status.

If the owner can prove a horse or burro or mule is the offspring of two wild horses or burros -   i.e. range bred -  they can compete as a wild horse, burro, or mule in all classes.  Comstock horses (including those adopted prior to the freeze branding program), Forest Service horses, US Fish & Wildlife Service horses & burros, Chincoteague Ponies, the so-called "Dann Sisters" Shoshone horses, and all horses, mules or burros born at home out of an adopted pregnant mare or jennet, or ANY other wild horse or burro population that can be documented is eligible to compete under WILD status.

APPENDIX STATUS:

A.) A wild-born horse or burro who lacks the documentation to prove it

B.) A Domestic-born animal with no documentation to prove that it was bred in the wild

C.) An animal both bred and born in captivity, with AT LEAST ONE WILD-BRED PARENT.

Appendix status also needs documentation, but admittedly we are trying out this classification this year on the Honor System. Contact the Expo Committee ahead of time if you aren't sure if your animal qualifies, and we will issue an advance ruling.  Anyone caught posing a ringer will be disqualified immediately and permanently.

A. IN-HAND CLASSES:

HALTER
Halter is the "Beauty Contest" of the show - Since Mustangs have a varied ancestry, no particular breed type is favored. Emphasis is on overall soundness, conditioning, correct conformation for smooth movement and sturdy serviceability, and overall balance, as well as that special "charisma."

1. HALTER MARES - 2 and Under
2. HALTER MARES - 3 and Older
3. HALTER GELDINGS & STALLIONS - 2 and Under
4. HALTER GELDINGS & STALLIONS - 3 and Older
5. HALTER: SURVIVOR* Wild Horse &/or Mule
6. HALTER: SURVIVOR* Wild Burro
7. HALTER BURROS: 2 and Under
Sponsored by CADAMA (California Donkey and Mule Association)
8. HALTER BURROS: 3 and Older
9. HALTER MULES: 2 and Under
10. HALTER MULES: 3 and Older

* Note: "Survivor" classes are to honor those wild-born animals who show physical evidence of having lived a tough life on the range. This would include animals with scars and scrapes, improperly healed breaks or wounds, etc. - things that would normally disqualify them from a halter class, but are part of a Wild Heritage. This is also the class to show your aged animals who have stood the test of time, but may not be competitive with younger animals.

GRAND CHAMPION & RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION WILD-BRED & APPENDIX MARE, MALE HORSE, BURRO, & MULE to be chosen from the First & Second Place winners in each class

SHOWMANSHIP AT HALTER:
This class focuses on the showman's ability to present the animal to best advantage, through proper maneuvers in the show ring, as well as preparation before the show: cleanliness, grooming, hoof care and maintaining ideal body condition (in other words, not too fat, not too thin, exercised regularly for proper musculature, etc.) Conformation of the animal is not an issue, except that each showman should work to present his/her animal to its best possible advantage, recognizing its strengths and weaknesses and compensating to the extent possible, through proper presentation. Over-showing, undue fussing, and extreme posturing are not rewarded, however.

EQUINE CITIZENSHIP
(Ground Manners)
:

These new classes are designed to encourage all adopters and owners of mustangs, mustang mules, and burros to develop safe and happy relationships with their adoptees: Socialization, ground manners, overall comfort on both equine and human's part, and training to perform specific everyday tasks of caring for the animal. Equine Citizenship is for everybody - not just "show horses."

Unlike domestic horses and donkeys and mules, before one can show a wild horse or burro or mule, one has to tame and train it. These classes afford an opportunity for people to show their good work in bringing their adopted wild horses and burros to a stage of gentling and training where the animal is adjusting well to domestic life and handling, even though saddle training may be a ways off yet.

20. POLE BENDING - DRIVEN IN HARNESS
Obstacle driving will be judged on the performance of the mule or donkey through a coarse set up on the arena. The animal is judged on the ease with which it maneuvers through the obstacles. Knocking over an obstacle, breaking gait, or disobedience are to be considered penalties. This is a timed event.
Sponsored by Cindy B. Lawrence - Lawrence Interior Group

21. LOG SKIDDING
Log Skidding is similar to POLE BENDING, only instead of being ridden through the poles, the horse, donkey or mule is driven through a series of cones, and is pulling a log. Points are deducted for knocking over a cone. This is a timed race.

AWARDS

Wild Horse and Burro Expo Horse Show
Award Rules

For the purposes of high point and championship awards, points for each horse/rider combination should only be accumulated within a single exhibitor classification (i.e. amateur, open, youth 12 and under, etc.)

If a competitor does choose to enter the same horse/rider combination in more than one exhibitor classification, the points from the two classifications will NOT be combined. Each division will be tallied separately.

Super Horse – Points for these awards are accumulated from a wide variety of English and Western Classes. The intent is to reward horses and riders that have taken the time to get good at a lot of different things. The Super Horse exemplifies the fact that wild horses and burros can do just about anything you ask them to do. Like all the awards, point will be tallied separately for each exhibitor classification, and the horse/rider combination with the most points, regardless of exhibitor classification will be the Super Horse.

English & Western Championships – Points for the English Championship are accumulated for English classes only, likewise for Western. The intent is to reward horses and riders who have worked very hard to master a specific discipline. Like all the awards, point will be tallied separately for each exhibitor classification, and the horse/rider combination with the most points, regardless of exhibitor classification will be the Champion.

Rider/Handler Awards Points from classes that are judged mostly on the rider’s or handler’s ability or that pose a special challenge to the rider or handler are tallied for these awards. The awards are already separated by exhibitor classification. The intent is to reward the rider/handler in each exhibitor classification who exhibits the greatest horsemanship skills. Points for these awards will be tallied separately for each horse/rider combination. A competitor showing two or more horses will have additional chances at the award, or will have a chance at winning both high point and reserve. However, a competitor showing two animals will NOT be allowed to combine points from the two different animals towards these awards.

Point System –

Points will be tallied using the following system:

1st place = 6 points, 2nd = 5 points, 3rd = 4 points, 4th = 3 points, 5th = 2 points, 6th = 1 point

Rider divisions with fewer than 6 total riders:
If an entire exhibitor classification has six or fewer competitors, points awarded within that classification will be modified based on the number of participants within the classification. For example, if there are 4 in the division, 1st place = 4 points, 2nd place = 3 points, etc. Points will not be reduced on an individual class by class basis, only for the entire exhibitor classification.

Bonus for large classes:
A bonus point will be awarded to all exhibitors who place in a class with ten or more entries. Two bonus points will be awarded if the class has twenty or more entries. For example, if there are 13 in the class, 1st place = 7 points, 2nd place = 6 points, etc.

Tie-breaker:
In the case of a tie, the exhibitor with the most blue ribbons is the winner. If there is a tie in the number of blue ribbons, the person with the most 2nds is the winner, etc.

EQUINE AWARDS:

Points for all awards are based on the same horse-rider pair. You may enter more than one horse or burro, but the points start over with each one.
