Beneficiaries for this year's Wild Horse & Burro Expo raffle are:
W.H.O.A. (Wild Horse Organized Assistance) - the organization founded by Velma Johnson (Wild Horse Annie) to advocate and protect wild horses - now directed by Dawn Lappin. WHOA advocates for wild horses in many ways, including caring for orphaned foals and estrays waiting for adoption, finding good adoptive homes, and providing advice and assistance to adopters.
The Warm Springs Correctional Center Gentling Program (Silver State Industries)
In this wonderful program, inmates tame and train wild horses, who are then available for adoption as already gentle saddle-trained animals. This performs valuable services to three groups:
1. to adopters who want a former wild horse but cannot or do not wish to learn to gentle and train it themselves.
2. to the "Comstock" horses - who live on lands not protected by the BLM, often in the path of development, and who might otherwise go to slaughter.
2. to the inmates themselves, who learn valuable skills and life lessons in the process of working with the horses.
