To enter Nevada, you must comply with your state of origin's requirements for brand inspection. ALL DOCUMENTS MUST ADEQUATELY IDENTIFY THOSE ANIMALS IN YOUR POSSESSION. IF NOT, YOU MAY BE SUBJECT TO FINES OR SEIZURE.
In Nevada, a current valid brand inspection certificate is required and must be in our possession. If your state of origin does not require brand inspection on horses, then you should have some proof of ownership accompanying them. Nevada residents should have proof of ownership in possession at all times when transporting livestock.
A current Livestock Health Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian is required to enter the State of Nevada. It must must show your animal(s) to be in good health and free from disease. The Voice Response Service (VRS) of the Center for Epidemiology and Animal Health 1-800-545-8732 is available to individuals wanting to know what health papers and tests are required to transport livestock to another state.
The VRS is a 24-hour, 365 days/yr (including holidays) access system that allows users to retrieve information. The retrieval system is accessed by simply dialing 1-800-545-8732 on a touch tone phone.
Once connection is made with the VRS, a simulated human voice announces a series of menus. The user can listen to emergency notices which may be in effect or select regulations pertinent to a specific state. FOR EACH SPECIFIC STATE, THE STATE VETERINARIAN PHONE NUMBER IS GIVEN IN CASE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON CURRENT REGULATIONS OR PERMITS ARE NEEDED. Additional menus provided by some states allow the user to select specific categories of import requirements. This system is very user friendly and offers everyone the opportunity to know ahead of time what tests are needed to transport animals, semen, and embryos across state lines for purchase, breeding or showing.
Equidae entering Oregon
Equidae includes horses, asses, donkeys, mules, and zebras.
Basic requirements are:
1. a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued less than 30 days prior to entry
2. an import permit issued by this office. For a permit, the veterinarian or clinic staff calls 503-986-4679.
3. a negative test for Equine Infectious Anemia less than 6 months prior to entry. Tests with "pending" results are not acceptable. (Oregon will accept either the ELISA test or the AGID test (sometimes called a "Coggins test")
Exceptions - The following are exempt from the EIA test requirement:
1. Nursing foals under 6 months of age, traveling with negative tested dam - and -
2. All Washington-resident horses.
Six-Month Equine CertificatesThe Six-Month Equine Certificates ("Passports" or "Extended Validity CVIs") are still valid for travel in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, & Washington. Think of the Six-Month Equine Certificate as a budget airline ticket. Once it Is issued it can't be altered. The issuing veterinarian must indicate which states the owner plans to travel to. ODA sends a copy to each of the states marked. Those states will expect a copy of the Trip Record at the end of the six month period. Owners, please remember: It is your responsibility to keep track of every trip out of state. At the end of the six-month period, you send a copy of both the front and the back of the CVI to each state checked on the front. The form for the Trip Record and the mailing addresses for the participating states are on the back of the owner's copy of the certificate. |

*** Horses & Other Equidae ***
All equidae must be accompanied by an official Health Certificate or Certificate of Veterinary Inspection stating that they are free from evidence of any communicable disease and have completed equine infectious anemia (EIA) test requirements.
Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) (Coggins Test)
· A negative test for EIA conducted in a USDA approved laboratory, within six months prior to entry.
· Entry is not allowed until the EIA test has been completed and reported negative. Equidae with tests "pending" are not acceptable.
· A nursing foal of less than 6 months of age accompanied by its EIA negative dam is exempt from the test requirement.
· California "working horses" used for seasonal ranching purposes outside of California are exempt from the above listed requirements, if a prior permit is obtained from the Animal Health Branch.
