Jerry Tindell has worked with horses since early childhood. Born into a logging family in Missouri, where horses & mules were used for daily in their logging business, Jerry began early to study equines and how to communicate with them. As an adult, Jerry worked first as a farrier and later on as a private trainer and a teacher for  mounted police units - where horses and their handlers must be able to handle a high level of stress and challenges.

Jerry has a deep love and appreciation for wild horses. He works with Lifesavers and other wild horse rescue groups, and was part of the LifeSavers team that went to Australia in 2001 at the request of groups there who are trying to save the Brumby.

The goal of Jerry’s teaching will be to assist the average person who adopts a mustang to achieve success while building a foundation that benefits both the horse and the human.

Jerry has a very interesting program for us:

Using a mustang who has only barely been started, Jerry will, over the three day period of WSWHBE, demonstrate everything from the basics of the round pen to (hopefully - depending on the horse's comfort level and readiness) the saddling and first riding experience of this particular mustang.

Day 1: Introduction and Round Pen Work - Jerry will discuss the general considerations involved when dealing with a young (or recently adopted) mustang. He will introduce the basic levels of awareness required within the human. He will also discuss the situation from the horse’s point-of-view. This understanding is critical to Jerry’s teaching. The human must recognize and respect the basic elements within the mustang. He will use pressure and release, along with the compassion and understanding required by the wild horse, to progress in the round pen to a level of positive behavior while establishing the foundation for continued learning and development.

Day 2: Ground Work – The relationship between any horse and human is defined on the ground. Jerry will show the audience the critical elements of proper groundwork and how it relates to the entire relationship with the equine: in the barn, in the saddle, in the trailer, in the horse’s domestic world. The foundation of Tindell’s teaching and successful progression when dealing with all horses (but, especially when developing a mustang!) is based upon safety and building mutual trust and growth within both the human and the horse. Some horsemen have difficulty recognizing the importance of groundwork and the development of the horse. Jerry Tindell will illustrate how these elements relate to the total ability and comprehension of the horse involved. The human will benefit immensely by recognizing the natural abilities of the wild horse. Today’s session may involve blanketing and saddling the demo horse. The bit and bridle may also be introduced.

Day 3 Jerry plans to continue working with the horse based upon the horse’s ability and understanding. Today’s demonstration will continue building a healthy foundation with the mustang, based upon his progress during the first two sessions. Placing the saddle upon his back, and possibly mounting the mustang will be part of today’s program. Jerry anticipates the ability to demonstrate the proper way to introduce the saddle and mounting experience to the novice wild horse in a non-combative manner, which will enable this horse to continue his progression as a content domestic animal.

Jerry is amazing to watch - he can take a very troubled horse and transform it within a short time to a soft, trusting animal.

Jerry is also an excellent teacher who is always respectful and helpful, regardless of the skill level of the student. He has an uncanny knack for knowing just the right thing that any individual student is ready to learn at a given moment.
